In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
- Through textual analysis of various music videos and research in to the background and conventions of a music video I gained understanding and knowledge of the conventions and elements in which make a music video a music video.
- Through my research I came across Goodwins Theory, we decided to apply Goodwins theory to our music video. The majority of Goodwins Six was applyed to our music video.
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There are often intertextual reference
These are the elements within Goodwins Six that point out characteristics and features that can be found in a music video.
Our music video doesn't really challange the conventions of a music video as we created a conventional music video, although we do use and develop the conventions. Our narrative and shot choices are conventional shots within our music video, we used extreme close ups in our performance part of the music video, close ups and mid-shots in our narrative sections, these are all conventions of a music video.
An unconventional aspect within our music video is no instruments are included, this could be seen as challanging the conventions within a music video.
This is the basis of what our question one consists of
